Sexual abuse by a doctor or health professional in Michigan

A complaint about a licensed health professional in Michigan can be filed with the Bureau of Professional Licensing, part of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), online through its MiPLUS system. Criminal reports go to the police. Civil claims follow the Michigan deadlines for sexual abuse claims.

Complaints about a licensed professional

LARA's Bureau of Professional Licensing takes complaints about licensed professionals online through the Michigan Professional Licensing User System (MiPLUS). Its page includes a citizen's guide to filing a complaint against a health care professional.

Health professionals must report child abuse

Physicians, nurses, physician's assistants, psychologists and other health professionals are among the people Michigan law requires to report suspected child abuse (MCL 722.623).

The 2018 window for claims against a physician

A 2018 change to Michigan law opened a 90-day window for older claims against a person convicted of first degree criminal sexual conduct who admitted using their position as the victim's physician, or medical treatment that was unethical or unacceptable (MCL 600.5851b(3)). That window has closed. The Justice for Survivors bills would replace it with a 1-year window that is not limited to physicians.
